Which Split System Air Conditioner Is the Most Economical?
With so many split systems on the market — and no shortage of sales gimmicks — it’s genuinely hard to tell which one is actually the most economical. With power prices only heading in one direction, it’s worth understanding what “economical” really means before you buy, rather than just comparing sticker prices in-store.
Cheap to Buy vs. Cheap to Run
An economical split system isn’t necessarily the cheapest one on the shop floor — it’s the one that costs the least over its lifetime. A bargain unit with poor efficiency will usually cost you more in the long run than a slightly pricier, genuinely efficient model. The savings from buying cheap upfront tend to disappear within a couple of summers once the power bills come in.
Get the Size Right First
Before anything else, the system needs to be sized correctly for the room — an undersized or oversized unit will never run economically, no matter how efficient it’s rated. We’ve covered exact sizing in detail in our split system sizing guide and our 2.5kW vs 3.5kW comparison — worth a read before you commit to a size.
Smart Features That Cut Waste
A few features consistently make a real difference to running costs:
- Timers and sleep modes — automatically wind back output once a target temperature or time is reached.
- Occupancy sensors — some current models detect when a room is empty and adjust output accordingly rather than running at full tilt regardless.
- Wi-Fi and app control — lets you turn the system off remotely if you forget on your way out, or pre-cool/pre-heat the house before you arrive, rather than blasting it at full power the moment you walk in.
Star Ratings, Briefly
Australia’s energy label rates split systems up to 6 stars standard, with up to 4 additional “super efficiency” stars for the most efficient models — up to 10 stars in total. It’s rare to find a unit rated highly efficient in both heating and cooling; if you do, expect a premium price tag. A more practical approach is to weigh up whether you’ll rely on the system more for heating or cooling through the year, and prioritise that rating. We go into more detail on reading these labels properly in our energy rating explainer.
The Rest of the Picture
Beyond the unit itself, running costs are shaped by things a star rating can’t capture — insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure, and where the unit is positioned in the room. If you’re not sure you’ve accounted for all of it, that’s exactly what a licensed technician is for.
